Two
Kind of Eternal Torments:
1- The Essential One:
All the pains and torments and horrors of earth put together, compared
with the torments of Hell, are like a light of a candle compared with
the fire of the Sun. It is called "the poena damni", or
"pain of loss", consists in the loss of the beatific vision
and in so complete a separation of all the powers of the soul from
God that it cannot find in Him even the least peace and rest.
Hell is a state of the greatest and most complete misfortune.
2- The Secondary One:
The "poena sensus", or "pain of sense", consists
in the torment of fire so frequently mentioned in the Holy Bible.
Pains and torments in the body, in the soul, in the spirit, in the
mind...
In Hell separation from the blissful influence of Divine love has
reached its consummation. The reunion of soul and body after the Last
Judgment will be a special punishment for the reprobate, although
there will be no essential change in the pain of sense which they
already have. |

| REFLECTIONS |
“Jesus’
Baptism”
Why did Jesus, the sinless one sent from the Father in heaven,
submit himself to John’s baptism? John preached a
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke
3:3). In this humble submission we see a foreshadowing of
the “baptism” of Jesus bloody death upon the
cross. Jesus’ baptism is the acceptance and the beginning
of his mission as God’s suffering Servant (Isaiah
52:13-15; 53:1-12). He allowed himself to be numbered among
sinners. Jesus submitted himself entirely to his Father’s
will. Out of love he consented to this baptism of death
for the remission of our sins. Do you know the joy of trust
and submission to God?
